This would allow me to set up messaging and be better aware of donors who give irregularly, or via interesting channels. I could then see/recognize/steward based on cumulative giving in a certain time span, or by style of giving (like annual donors, or monthly donors. It would also eliminate the need for my staff to run control reports looking for members to opt in to special "recognition" categories.
